I was born in London in 1963 to a British mother and an Austrian father. Whisked away to Paris in a carrycot three weeks later with an invented name that stemmed from my mother’s love of the Fens in England, I grew up surrounded by three languages, fascinated by words and their transition from one language to another. In 1981 I enrolled in the University of Paris Sorbonne-Nouvelle to broaden my knowledge of English and German. Later I attended master’s degree seminars on English-French literary translation and comparative stylistics. In 1988, after working in emergency medical care alongside my studies, I became a trainee proofreader and editorial assistant in the foreign literature department at Fayard, then assistant editor at Syros, where I was responsible for translation coordination and liaised with authors, illustrators, typesetters and graphic designers. It was there that I fell in love with children’s picture books, in which I saw an opportunity to combine my passions for text, image, layout, colour and typography. In 1997, a long-cherished dream came true: I became a literary translator. Besides novels and children’s books, I translate art catalogues, articles, film scripts and documentaries for French television. My next goal? To subtitle feature films!
